The Lantern
by Whisper

*This tutorial is for experienced PSP users.*

This is something new I am trying, not really a tutorial but more for fun and practice.  I will provide the alpha channels for the item and give some general hints/tips on how I did certain things.  I would like to hear from y'all about what you think of this idea!  If I get positive feedback I will probably add more of these "tutorials".

This tutorial was created and put on this site on May 14, 2003.
It is property of and 2001-2003 to Whisper's Web Works.
Please do not copy or place this tutorial or any of the graphics on any site,
email or elist without written permission directly from me. If you would like to share the url for this tutorial, you may do so without writing for permission, but I always welcome a "who, where" email.  Thank you.

Paint Shop Pro  ~ download a trial version.
You will need to download the PSP image which contains the alpha channels.
You can download the candle tube here.
(Both of these files are zips.)

Now it is pretty much up to you and how you want to achieve your finished lantern.

Open the ww-lantern.psp in PSP and all the alpha channels are ready to go.

Hints/Tips:

I would put each piece on a separate layer so that you can play with each and get it just to your liking.

I used a dark gray for the outline of the pieces and a medium/dark gray gradient for the fills.

To get some shape I used a cutout on each piece and then smoothed out the look by adding noise.

I added some texture to the two rectangular pieces at top and bottom.

The flame was drawn with a tear drop vector shape and filled with an orange outline and an orange/yellow gradient.

I duplicated the flame and used EC4000, jiggle to give a bit of movement to the flame.

The flame glow was made with the airbrush tool and then blurred.

Have fun!

Here are some that I did:
